Sonae have a Worldwide Operation which began back in 1959 as the Portuguese Company manufactured high pressure laminates.The Company spread its activities in 1979 when it took
control of Novopan, a particle board Company.
Messing Up the World For Profit
Sonae set up in the late 70's a melamine surfacing production line, basically this means that whatever is passed through the production line is coated with various chemicals to produce a 'plastic' finish.
Chipboard furniture was seen as a way of supplying cheap furniture to the masses. The production processes used to churn out this cheap furniture was very damaging to the environment as it involved both the decimation of World Forests and the a massive chemical production industry to supply the chemicals needed to treat the wood.
Dealing With Dictatorships
Through the years Sonae became aggressive players in a Market noted for its corruption and enviromentaly hazardous operations. Sonae were involved with the Apartheid Regime in South Africa, they acquired the South African Company Novabord in 79 and are at present the biggest manufacturers of Particle Board and Medium density particle board in South Africa
and also have over 250 stockist distributors. There are 3 massive Plants similar to the Kirkby Factory in South Africa, we will no doubt find out more on what's been happening there.
Gasmasks for the Workers?
There is a Massive Plant in Brazil, it seems Sonae could not miss the chance to plunder the rich supply of forests there.
There is also a Plant in Quebec Canada which it seems has had a lot of trouble concerning health and safety issues.
A lot of concern regarding the use of Formaldehyde has been forthcoming.

and it seems that we will have a lot to report there once the details come in of apparently workers being issued gas masks.
Knowsley Council Welcomed Sonae!
In the UK we have 2 plants, here in Kirkby and a plant in Northern Ireland, Castleroe, Coleraine. So far there has been little news of the Ireland plant, but it is worth noting that Sonae have chosen to locate most of their plants in areas where there was massive grants available
and where there were local authorities who could be persuaded to deal with them. Sonae researched well and came to the conclusion that the Council here would be too greedy to resist Sonae's financial contribution.
They were right. Knowsley Council, just like most of the councils and bodies Sonae deal with are blinded by Corporate greed. Never ever forget the Scum who got Sonae here in the first place.
European Market TakeoverFrance too has a massive 13 sites, it seems there operation there has been split into smaller plants but it is surprising the French take any crap from Sonae. In Germany Sonae is big with Four Factories situated in the Country. This means that Europe has been pretty much cornered off as a Market for Sonae and you need to ask how much they have scrounged in the way of grants etc to set up these factories.

Sonae have a massive number of Plants and Factories around the World, here is a list of the Countries where Sonae are located.It is worth pointing out that many of the Countries were Sonae have operated have a terrible record on Human Rights abuses and a total lack of regard for the environment.
