Merseyside rapist Andrew Mc Carten is to be sentenced in March. Mc Carten,
known as the 'Greenbank Rapist' carried out a campaign of sex attacks between
April 2001 and July 2002 including two rapes, one involving a 19 yr old student and the
other a 16yr old local schoolgirl. Mc Carten lay in wait in Greenbank Park
pouncing on his victims who all had long blonde hair.
Victim thought she was going to die.
Mc Cartey tried to wash DNA evidence from the first victim as he pushed her
into the nearby lake in the park. This traumatised young girl thought she was going
to die as Mc Cartey carried out the rape then pushed her towards the lake.
Other victims too were severely traumatised, and
Kirkby Times can only see one possible sentence for this lowlife. Mc Cartey should
serve life.
Life meaning life. The violent rapes he carried out and the string of
assaults were enough to alert us as to the danger of this individual. No doubt some
do gooder's will tell us otherwise.
Trapped By a Phonecall
In Mc Cartey's final outrage on the Women of Merseyside,
this lowlife broke into a house in Mossely Hill. Upon forcing his
way inside, he found a 16yr old girl on the phone talking to her friend,
whilst her mother was asleep upstairs. He forced his way into the property,
knocked this poor girl over,
and then gagged her with a handkerchief and some sticky tape. The Girls
friend remained on the phone and heard the 16yr old begging Mc Carten
not to rape her. The friend phoned the Police. No indication is given
as to the response time, but by the time officers arrived, Mc Carten
had raped the girl twice and was hiding in a cupboard.
Rape: A Horrific Crime
Mc Carten will be sentenced in March; he obviously remains in custody now,
and will likely be under pressure from 'ordinary decent criminals' who have few
charitable thoughts for rapists. Rape is a horrific crime which scars the victims
for life. It seems that the actual sentencing for rapists is often less than we
would wish. This goes for all crimes of a sexual nature.
Kirkby Sexual Attacker could still be at large.
We always need to make sure our Police, and the community,
prioritise the investigation of such attacks, the Police themselves may not always
have the resources to ensure such crimes are properly investigated
and it seems that last year, a sexual attack on a child in Kirkby
seemed to have people questioning the somewhat slow response many
felt took place. For all we know this paedophile remains at large
here or on Merseyside. One thing's for sure, he's out there, and
neither the people of Kirkby nor the Police can be comforted by one
that slipped the nets as it were.
Lock them up forever.
Mc Carten will be sentenced as stated in March this year. Judge Clark told
the rapist to "steel himself for a long sentence" Those who commit sexual
offences of this grave nature should be thrown into a prison cell and NEVER
be allowed to walk the streets again.
Rape and Actual convictions in the UK: Extremely worrying Statistics
In 1996 there were 5759 reported rapes in the UK. 573 convictions were secured
in those cases, that's a statistic of some 1 in 10 cases reported being successfully
prosecuted. The actual number of rapes will be much higher than the reported
statistics. In 1977, when the Police were based more in communities, there
were 1015 rapes reported, and 324 convictions, that's a conviction rate of
some 32%. By 1987 this conviction rate went down to some 18% with reported
rapes more than doubling to 2471. The pattern is obvious. The Police are
losing the fight and the conviction rate has fallen dramatically since
the 70's. It's possible that statistics dating back the 40's, 50's and
60's may have seen an even higher conviction rate. What were the Police
doing right back then? And what has led to the situation now where the
average rapist has a 1 in 10 chance of being caught? These statistics
should be studied by every Police Force in the UK.
You cannot blame the Police for the Rapists,
but its there Job to catch them and statistics show they are not doing so.
In reality a rapist has about a
1 in 100 chance of being caught
if, as figures indicate, only 10% of rape victims are actually reporting the crime.
Can a Judge give us Justice for once?
Kirkby Times will report on the sentence in March and we hope that Justice
Clark may actually live up to his title for once and give us Justice.
Sadly though, the Law in the UK has little to do with Justice and there
are some very worrying sentences regarding crimes of a sexual nature.
Perhaps the Community itself should be a part of the sentencing procedure;
it seems that the ordinary people of Kirkby have far more sense than a lot
of Judges. There have been rapists convicted and given community hours,
even the paedophiles get minimum sentences and statistics show 1 in 3 will
go on to commit more offences within 6 months of release.
