The Dixie Dean
Memorial Statue outside Goodison, Home of Everton FC, has been attacked
by vandals who painted the statue red. The attack took place in the build
up to the recent Liverpool Everton derby match on Sunday Dec 22nd. The
attack was condemned by Everton FC's Ian Ross who rightly said it was
a 'disgusting and disrespectful act' He also added that 'I know that
all right-thinking lovers of football in this city - be they blue or
be they red - will condemn this piece of sick vandalism'
Dixie a Legend in his own Lifetime.
Dixie Dean was a legend in his own lifetime, his footballing skills were
admired by all who saw him, and his record of 60 goals in a league season
has never been matched since. Dixie died whilst watching a Liverpool v Everton
game at Goodison Park on 1st March 1980 aged 73. He died perhaps as he would have
wished watching the game he loved. As Bill Shankly said "Dixie was the greatest
centre forward there will ever be. His record of goalscoring is the most amazing
thing under the sun. He belongs in the company of the supremely great… like Beethoven,
Shakespeare and Rembrandt."
Attack the Work of Idiots
The attack on this statue is the Work of idiots.
This would not have been Liverpool fans or even any of
the lads who still like to fight, generally with each other,
a bit like a 'fight club' for football fans. A couple of seasons
ago, there was another alleged attack on the Dixie Dean statue. The
rumour went around Everton fans that the statue had been painted red,
but the incident never happened. Apparently, according to people in the
know, a Jumper had been put on the statue, a small bit of paint, a smear,
had to be wiped off. Shortly afterwards, as Liverpool paraded the 3 Trophies
won that season, the Anfield Hillsborough Living Flame memorial was daubed
in Blue Paint. Attacking memorials whether the Dixie Dean memorial or the
Hillsborough memorial is a disgrace. It's doubtful that this Dixie Dean
memorial attack was a lone nut attacking the statue. Its more likely the
work of two or more idiots who may well find Merseyside's hospitality in
short supply if they are unmasked and exposed. Any other idiots thinking
of attacking memorials has better bear in mind that some Everton and
Liverpool fans will choose to bypass the Police and Criminal Justice
System if they find out who has done it.
