CCTV, Does it Work?

A Spy in the Community?

CCTV, harmless security measure or sinister mass surveilance

Pictured Above is just one of hundreds of CCTV camera's in Kirkby with more planned. George Orwell wrote in his book 1984 of a society in which the Government had the capability to spy on the whole population, it seems Knowsley Council think its a great idea, but what are the figures for actual convictions based on CCTV footage? For now we'll leave that question on hold whilst we await an answer.

CCTV Everywhere

Kirkby has seen some serious money spent on CCTV cameras, which are then used by various security firms and the police to monitor whichever area they are situated. About 3 years ago I asked the Council to provide me with figures indicating the actual success of the CCTV cameras placed on and around four blocks of flats. It is fairly simple to determine whether or not any convictions have been secured through evidence provided by the CCTV but so far I have no idea how many if any convictions have been secured.

Euro Grants for the Spys

The Council and Police
were all for CCTV going up everywhere they could put it, most of the CCTV here has been subject to the usual euro grants etc and a lot of local political campaigners do not really care if CCTV monitors the whole of Kirkby. Nevertheless there is a question of privacy and civil liberties at stake here, and it would be a sensible idea to actually do as I have suggested and see if the cameras actually prevent crime.

Sexual Liaisons on CCTV!

So far
I have heard that the only real incidents of any note captured by the CCTV's has been a number of sexual liaisons! It is also noticeable that the close proximity of these cameras in residential areas means that some could well be pointed to gaze directly in your house, do you trust these CCTV's to respect your privacy? The security guards who are in charge of monitoring some of the the CCTV are on a low wage, so low that a boss of the security firm contracted to 'secure' Tower Blocks in kirkby declined to answer my question on how much the guards were paid. The question was relevant because in my opinion a security guard on a low wage is simply not going to give a damn for the job in hand. no-one does a good job for a low wage, FACT.

Working on the side?, watch out!

The Government
is obsessed with CCTV and monitoring the population at large. We live in a society where spying and dirty deals are the norm. Its my opinion that the CCTV is more to keep the poor from robbing the rich than each other. In a society where everyone is under surveillance, who watches those who watch us?, and what happens if those who watch us turn rotten? All in all CCTV could be Big Brother surveillance being sneaked in disguised as a weapon to combat crime. Eventually all the CCTV will be linked up so the police and more sinister forces will be able to spy at will in any community. This would be extremely handy in the event of civil unrest and would enable the DSS and other government agencies to pick out anyone from a striking shop steward to someone working on the side or any number of people all breaking a few laws but still respected by the community.

Even More Grants for CCTV in Kirkby

Whilst there is
definitely a use for such technology, it is always dangerous to let it be controlled by the powers that be and used for them to protect their own interests rather than help prevent crime in the community, which affects us in Kirkby. Regardless of all these facts the local political idiots up here have decided to use more grants to fund even more CCTV set ups here. Its all to easy to get funding for this whilst other much needed and useful improvements to the community are seemingly impossible to fund.

1984: its already happenning

George Orwell
wrote a brilliant book called 1984 which was his own vision of an England where everyone was under surveillance and a fascist state was unhindered by opposition due to this mass surveillance. The first glimpse i had of this was when the miner's villages were subject to mass surveillance by the police and British security services with the use of mobile CCTV set ups. If you trust the Government when it says CCTV is purely to help us then you are, in my opinion, naive, but maybe your just one of the monkeys who got the contract to install it. Whatever you think, and even if you haven't formed an opinion, you can always look into the matter yourself. I'll repeat my point about the actual convictions due to CCTV. I will e-mail Knowsley Council and try to get a simple answer on that one. If they've spent thousands and haven't even caught someone pissing in a lift then I guess the real reason for spying on Kirkby is more sinister.
