Dear Kirkby Times,
I am a 14 year old Kirkby resident and live on the Old Hall Estate.
Last week I was walking my lurcher and my Jack Russell through the town centre,
as i approached the bandstand my Jack Russell slipped the lead and ran into the
shrubbery surrounding the Kirkby library. Minutes later with there being no
sign of Kimmy, my lurcher, Suki, started to show an interest in the bushes too,
with in seconds my Jack Russell emerged from the bushes with a huge rat in her
mouth. Thinking that this could just be a wild rat that had made its home in
the shrubbery I left it at that.
Kirkby Town Centre infested with Rats
Later on in the week my cousin and I were riding through on our bikes when we saw a large
rat scurry from a grid facing the library into the shrubbery, it became
clear to me that the rat my Jack Russell had caught had not been the only
one. After that we sat on the benches at the bandstand waiting and within
10 minutes of sitting patiently we had seen four rats run back and forth
from the bushes then go down various grids. I own a fancy rat myself, and
think they are intelligent little creatures, but being in a hunting club I
am aware of the disease that wild rats can spread, and such a central place
as the Kirkby bandstand being, (and I use this word strongly) infested with
rats would not help the Kirkby reputation.
11 Rats caught
Since last week I've been over to the library a couple of times with my two
dogs and I have had a total of 11 rats all together, but my two dogs
and I are not capable of getting rid of the majority of rats, which in
my opinion needs to be done sooner rather than later. I am sure you
have already been informed about the rats, but I thought it would be
best to let you know.
I look forward to hearing from you
Thanks!!
The Rat Catcher
Ed: It is kinder for a dog to hunt these rats than to poison them - Knowsley council should pay the rat Catcher
for his efforts. I'm sure most people will say 'thanks'.
