There is to be
a good scheme run in Knowsley which has only now been taken up by the Council.
It involves collecting garden waste separately from household rubbish and
30,000 homes have been supplied with bio degradable bags for holding any
garden waste. With fortnightly collections of the waste, it is a
simple scheme and one which is common sense. Pictured above is one of the new bags ready to be collected.
30% of our household waste is recyclable
The service will operate through the summer of 2003 and hopefully
will be extended to cover other regions if this is deemed a success. Some
people in Kirkby still compost their own garden waste but most people sadly take
little interest in what was a common activity for the working class who had a patch of land.
Till now, most of us have simply thrown any recyclable waste in with the rest of the rubbish
which in turn are threw into massive landfill sites. About 30% of our household waste is recyclable, and this scheme is to be applauded. However, before we fall over ourselves congratulating Knowsley Council, let's not forget their appalling lack of environmental concern which has bought the likes of Sonae here and robbed us of a lot of green spaces.
Good Waste
The material which can be placed in the garden waste bags are:
Lawn mowings, finished flowers, prunings, hedge clippings and leaves.
Bad Waste
Things NOT welcome in the bags are: Rubble (don't knock down your
kitchen and expect the rubble to be cleared - someone will have a go!) Paper,
plastic, metal , glass clothes and textiles, food scraps. Some people will try
to take advantage but the bags are see through and if it isn't garden waste,
you'll be left with bags on the path.
How to dispose of the garden waste
Simply put your waste in the bags which you have been given, tie them and leave
them out near the front of your property on the day of collection before 7.00am.
Don't put the bags in your wheelie bin or in plastic bags. We have all been given
a 'more bags please' label which is to be attached to the last of the bags when
you run out.
