The United Kingdom of Sickness....

Montage of a £20 note - and a battered OAP with the title - Justice for the UK

People who treat the elderly badly are the dregs of society. Frighteningly some of these people are allowed to care for the elderly in care homes. A BBC Panorama documentary on later tonight Sunday 15th Nov 10, 15pm, BBC 1, exposes the level of abuse some of the elderly have to put up with. An undercover reporter gets a job with several agencies and the scenes that are shown will disturb you. In Liverpool we have seen hundreds of private 'care' homes open up since the 80's - these places were called 'Granny Farms' as they were built with the sole purpose of making money for certain individuals and agencies and companies. Treating our elderly this way is disgusting. They gave their all and we treat them now as third or forth class citizens. It's about time the so called Great British Public woke up from their slumber and started for fight for the elderly.

They gave there all....

As young men and women - the elderly today sacrificed a lot to build this Country and its many great public services. To leave them abandoned and at the mercy of workers with no qualifications or any empathy for old folk is a disgrace. Below you can see a few Liverpool lads during WW2 taking a welcome breather in the local pub somewhere in Germany. Many lads never returned from the hell of World War 2. They would turn in their graves to know that there comrades and the people of this Country were betrayed by our own politicians. A magnificent generation was slaughtered for what?

Old folk abused.

A 91 year old woman who has crippling arthritis and is senile had one care worker state "You've got to treat her a bit rough", whilst the manger of the 'care' home working for Care Connect in Crosby stated that "She's an old witch" Other Care Staff in other 'care' homes are recorded saying that the elderly they cared for were "ar**holes", "w*nkers", and "bastards". These people should be rooted out and treated severly if found to be actually abusing the elderly.

How much sicker can this Country get?

Other shocking footage will show a 92 yr old who is left in a bed soaked in urine. How much sicker can this Country get? Other old folk are left without being bathed and in Kirkby we can report that some agencies charged with minding the housebound may well be offering a less than perfect service. We will investigate and local care homes are welcome to report on their own situation - why not invite Kirkby Times to interview the old folk?

To all those who do work with the elderly and do a damn good job - why not tell Kirkby Times so we can know our old folk are being looked after. Tell us YOUR story and what YOU think about care of the elderly in Kirkby.

To any of the elderly reading this - most of us want to make sure you are treated with the utmost respect. Most of us do treat the elderly with respect and if readers of Kirkby Times keep an eye on this care and report on what's happening to the old folk - then it's a service to the community - and a warning to the unscrupulous owners of care homes and agencies that we will be watching how our elderly are treated. We cannot tolerate this profit driven care system and the care of the elderly should be the domain of local authorities with trained and accredited and accountable staff. Ask yourself if any care homes in Kirkby use agencies to hire staff - is it possible that unqualified staff who are not vetted or trained properly are working here in Kirkby with our old folk?

It's up to the people of Kirkby to keep an eye on things and to help. Only a strong community with a true network of local concerned and motivated people will tackle this issue. Please send in any information you have regarding the care of the elderly in Kirkby. OAP's are welcome to tell us what they think - YOUR input to this website is vital.

Carol Harris - Care Connect

The manager or director of Care Connect was on Roger Phillips BBC Radio radio phone in today.(17 11 03) A typical Middle Class manager type - her defence of her Care Home was outrageous - yet Roger gave her a relatively easy ride when it was obvious she was a poor spokesperson. Funnily enough, the next guest was a Unison Spokesman who was jumped on by Roger Phillips when he tore into Sefton Council and told Roger that Unison had warned the council. Roger let Carol Harris say things like "The people in the care home are almost like out own family".

Lets hope Care Connect have their contract reviewed ASAP and are kicked out of Merseyside. Care Connect will have earned hundreds of thousands of pounds whilst offering a standard of care which is simply just nowhere near good enough. Care connect and many other private care homes in Liverpool should be taken back into control of the local authorities. Making a profit off our old folk should not be an option.
